This Recipe is tried and tested and after the the third time I finally got in right. The first time it was so dry. The second time it was oily and almost bland. The third time it was perfect and I’ve probably eaten more than 10 pieces yikes! I should hit the gym or not. Making this can be tedious tho! To make this meat pie, we need the dough and the filling.
For the dough you will need:
- 4 cups of all-purpose flour
- 2 sticks / 1/2 cup of butter
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- a pinch of salt (optional)
- some water
To make the dough
I’ve made this dough both manually and with a mixer with dough attachment
Step 1: Put the flour, butter, baking powder and salt in a bowl and use your hand to mix them till they look like crumbs.
Step 2: Then add water little by little because amount of water to be added could differ.
*Knead the dough to form a ball then put in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes. It will make it easier to roll.
For the filling you will need:
- 1 tablespoon of oil
- chopped onions
- ground beef/meat
- chopped carrots
- chopped potatoes
- 1/3 cup of all-purpose flour
To make the filling
Step 1: Heat the oil for 3 minutes then add the onions and saute for 2 min.
Step 2: Add the ground beef/meat and let it cook through till it is pale brown in color. If the ground beef/meat produced some liquid it is fine. Next, season the meat with knorr/maggi, salt and thyme. (Always remember you can add salt you can extract it). Add some water and let it cook for another 5 minutes.
Step 3: Taste the meat and adjust the taste then pour in the carrots and potatoes, add some water and let it cook for another 5-7 minutes.
Step 4: Check if the potatoes and carrots are soft. If so, mix the flour with a little bit of water (to the consistency of like tomato sauce). Pour the mixture into the meat and mix. This should thicken the filling and prevent it from feeling dry. Leave to cook for 2 minutes. and voila it is done!
MAKING THE PIE
- Set the oven to 350 F
- Get the dough out from the fridge
- Whisk an egg in a bowl
- Butter the pan or use cooking spray
Step 1: Knead your dough and divide into smaller parts. Roll your dough [make sure your flour the surface you are using to roll the dough] making sure it is not too thin. Cut out a circle using a cutter, cover of your pot or your ‘milo’ tin basically anything that will give you a round cut.
Step 2: Put your filling on the rolled out dough. Seal the edge with eggs and fold it over. Use a fork to seal further seal it so it doesn’t pop open in the oven.
Step 3: Once all your meat pie is made, brush up some whisked eggs on it. Put in the oven till its brown (25-30min)
Enjoy the reward of your hard work meatpie!
